Marcel Lourens is a PhD student at the chair Applied Analysis and Mathematical Physics in the department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente.
His research focuses on formulating low-dimensional dynamic network models of the brain structures relevant in Parkinson's disease and analyzes their bifurcations. Such analysis provides new insights about Parkinson's disease and can later improve treatment (e.g. deep brain stimulation) of these patients. The models require electrophysiological and anatomical data from human and animal experiments which he obtains by cooperating with Amsterdam Medical Center and Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour at the Radboud University Nijmegen.
